An Impromptu Meeting Location

Toast of the Mountain, is a Toastmaster’s club for City of Flagstaff and Coconino County employees. We meet the first and third Thursday of each month at noon.  Our Sergeant at Arms does a first-rate job of reserving a meeting room and setting up a lecturn, banner and other meeting necessities before the meeting.  On May 5th,  we were bumped out of our usual meeting room because it was needed for interviews, and as no other meeting rooms were available and the day was beautiful, we set up outside. An inverted recycle bin served as lectern with a cardboard box on top of it, and we sat on low concrete walls amid the green grass.

Staying focused was a real challenge for all speakers because of the noise of Route 66 traffic and the trains in the background and people walking past us.  Our first speaker delivered his Ice Breaker with confidence and volume to the surprise and admiration of the club.  After the second speaker delivered a captivating Speech Number Two, she said she actually felt more comfortable speaking outside in the open air--alfresco.  We all agreed that despite some challenges, this was one of our best meetings ever!
